Roommate Agreement
An agreement between people who share a home in a common-law province: rent shares and the day each roommate pays, how the rent deposit was contributed and how it comes back, utilities and shared bills, bedrooms and shared space, guests, quiet hours, cleaning, and the notice a departing roommate must give. Its practical value is jurisdictional. Provincial tenancy legislation governs the relationship between a landlord and a tenant, not the relationship between roommates: in Ontario the Landlord and Tenant Board will generally decline a dispute between co-tenants, leaving Small Claims Court as the route for an unpaid share — and that route depends on having written the shares down.
